SUNGURA heavyweights, Alick Macheso and Nicholas Zakaria, granddad of Zim music, Oliver Mtukudzi and heir to the Utakataka throne, Peter Moyo will this weekend take turns to entertain fun lovers at the popular entertainment centre, The Platinum (formerly Pick and Save). This is the first time artistes of such an eminent calibre will be performing at the same venue during the same weekend.
The first pair of Macheso and Madzibaba will square off tonight (Friday), while superstar Oliver Mtukudzi and Peter “Dhewa” Moyo will serenade their legion of fans tomorrow (Saturday).
All shows start at 8pm.
Although Tuku and Peter Moyo could not be reached to comment on the weekend’s potentially explosive shows, veteran sungura aces whose roots date back to the Khiama era, in the early nineties, Macheso and Madzibaba promised to continue where they left from the last time they were in Mutare.
The duo who last performed at the venue late last month recorded a historic turnout. The show lasted up to 7am, the following day. A classic moment was when Macheso partnered with the Senior Lecturer, Zakaria as a backing vocalist and bassist on several songs such as Mabvi nemagokora and Zomvela mvela.
The Tafadzwa Nyarara carver, speaking through his manager, William “Yellow” Tsandukwa, said: “We received so many calls from fans asking us to come back to Mutare for a joint show with Nicholas Zakaria and we took heed. We are coming in full force by public demand.
“We are so overwhelmed by the way fans in Mutare treat us. I think they were enthralled by our last performance. We are glad to be back kumakomoyo,” said the elated Tsandukwa.
Goat-bearded wordsmith and sungura veteran, Nicholas Madzibaba, said the show would be yet another ideal platform for him to market his new album, Rumbidzo.
The project features tracks such as Mwari anogona, Wakakodzera, Rudo runokosha, Pane nyaya and Mbiri ndeya Mwari among others.
“I am humbled. We feel great that they appreciate our music. Our combination is electric. We will continue from we left,” said the Mazano hit-maker.
The two artistes have been in the musical ring for more than two decades.
They worked together when sungura was still the most appreciated genre in Zimbabwe.
They made history by becoming one of the most consistent sungura groups in the country.
The group, Khiama Boys still exists and going strong, while its product Alick “Chisale” Macheso is still on top of the game.
The Khiama Boys who performed that night were bass guitarist, Ray Chimwanda, lead guitarist, Nicholas Zakaria, rhythm guitarist, Devine Mukombwe, sub-rhythm guitarist, Knowledge Kapfupi, drummer, Wellington Sande and backing vocalist, Godknows Landilani.
The most celebrated Zim music icon, Mtukudzi backed by Black Spirits is expected to wow fans with yester-year hits like Ziwere, Perekedza mwana and Chengetai.
