Sunway City death toll rises to five

The death toll from the commuter omnibus accident that occurred near Sunway City in Harare yesterday has risen to five after one of the 10 injured persons died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

The fifth victim is Joyce Mundogwinya (52) of Ushewokunze, Harare.

Four people died yesterday after the driver of the commuter omnibus they were travelling in lost control of the vehicle and it rolled three times before landing on its wheels.

These four were identified as Keylia Munene (11 months old), Loice Rushizha of Dzivarasekwa (69), Steven Ngozha of Dzivarasekwa (74) and Violet Mesa of Nyamanhindi Village, Rusape.

National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the development.

“Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s post on the X platform regarding a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on July 10, 2024 at around 1330 hours at the 20-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mutare Road, near Mabvuku turn off,” he said.

“The death toll has risen to five after one of the 10 injured victims died upon admission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should observe stipulated speed limits and abide by all road rules and regulations to curb road traffic accidents.”
