According to ZBC News, residents who had yesterday received news that their houses would be destroyed again staged a demonstration against the property developers.
The residents, however, acknowledged encroaching onto the property developers’ land.
They argued that the local authorities had agreed with the developers on a grace period to allow them to be relocated elsewhere.
Mabvuku-Tafara district administrator Mr Carlison Matafare confirmed that they had entered into a bilateral agreement with the property developer as they sought alternative land to relocate the affected 300 people.
“We have an agreement with Sunway City in which we undertook to provide the affected people alternative stands in Ward 6 which is currently being developed.
“If all is well we expect it to be habitable by the end of April and we are shocked that Sunway City is said to have gone to demolish the homes before the agreed time frame.”
The private developer went ahead and demolished houses.
The demolitions were carried out on the strength of the High Court order to evict the residents from the land, which the company claims was set aside as an industrial park.
