MY resolution for 2017 is high sounding but very simple, simplicity is said to be the ultimate sophistication after all. I intend to be pugnacious this year. That is who I am. That is is how I was born.
Crucially that is why – I presume – my presence on the best sports pages in the country has been extended by at least another year.I can hear those journalists who poke their noses into this page looking for news celebrating, I am their gift that keeps on giving and will not let them down even if they do not give credit for the stories – if we may call them that – they fish from this pond.
Forgive me for my etiquette or lack thereof, compliments of the new season comrades, friends and others.
Happy New Year! These words might sound hollow to Macauley Bonne, the English based midfielder, who is desperate to feature for the Warriors at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The Colchester United man has pulled all the stops to make himself eligible for selection and should be getting a Zimbabwean passport this week. But just when he thought the storm was over Bonne became the latest victim of Kallisto Pasuwa’s old trick of not answering or returning calls. The midfielder is shattered but at 21 Bonne need not be worried, his day will come.
I have serious issues with Pasuwa, very serious ones. However, there comes a time when a choice has to be made between washing and burning the national flag. This is the time when Liverpool legend Bill Shankly’s most famous quote rings true.
“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that,” Shankly famously said.
The impending Afcon finals in Gabon are far more important that life and death, they are bigger than all our egos put together. This is not the time to major on the minor.
One is hard pressed to find someone who loves controversy like Yours Truly and there is plenty of it in the Warriors camp at the moment. Khama Billiat, the Warriors kit, effort to get Mkhupali Masuku out of the plane to Gabon and so forth and so forth (to borrow a line from PC).
But what good is it to expose such shenanigans when our boys are about to go to war?
The time has come to rally behind Pasuwa, his methods and his boys.
I don’t believe that football games are won through the help of a bald headed prophet, who goes into the bush with a long staff and shouts himself hoarse.
But if that is what the guys in charge of our national football team believe in I am in their corner for the duration of Afcon.
I will chew into them when they return from Gabon without the Afcon trophy. News that the national team will be dressed by Mafro has also caused a storm with Zimbabweans taking turns to lampoon the training kit that was posted on social media.
As one of only 16 teams at Afcon one would expect leading sports manufacturers to come knocking on the Warriors door and not the other way round.
Zifa claim that Mafro is a top sports apparel supplier.
They are lying. This company is not big by any stretch of the imagination; it’s based in Singapore, employs “5-10 people” and has offices in Zambia and Ghana.
There are so many questions hanging over this arrangement but this is not the time to ask such.
Patience is a virtue.
Remember at one time Edzai Kasinauyo claimed and netted gullible believers that both Dynamos and Highlanders were now part of the Adidas family? You owe us answers Captain Fiasco and we are coming for them after Afcon!
