SUNDAY is the final day of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season, and instead of basking in glory, Zimbabwe’s two most decorated clubs — Highlanders and Dynamos — are staring down the barrel of relegation. For teams long considered the backbone of domestic football, this is uncharted territory.
Both giants sit precariously on 38 points, locked in a nine-team dogfight where the usual safety benchmark of 39 points may no longer guarantee survival. The bottom-half of the table has become a minefield, with margins so thin that one result could flip the script entirely.
Highlanders, Chicken Inn, Manica Diamonds and Dynamos all share 38 points. Breathing down their necks are Triangle and Bikita Minerals on 37, Green Fuel on 36, and Yadah on 35. Only Kwekwe United, marooned on 10 points, have already been condemned to Division One. For the rest, Sunday is judgement day.

At Barbourfields Stadium, Highlanders host city rivals Chicken Inn in what is shaping up to be one of the most consequential Bulawayo derbies in recent memory. Both sides need only a draw to survive, but neither has shown the consistency that inspires confidence. Chicken Inn coach Joey Antipas summed up the mood.
“It’s disappointing that such established clubs find themselves in this position, but we will seek a win rather than rely on permutations.”
In Harare, Dynamos face a daunting clash against FC Platinum. A draw should secure their safety, but a defeat — coupled with favourable results for teams below — could plunge the Glamour Boys into a relegation nightmare that once seemed unthinkable.
Meanwhile, Manica Diamonds, also on 38 points, host Bikita Minerals at Sakubva. For Bikita, coached by former Zifa technical director Wilson Mutekede, the equation is simple: nothing less than victory will guarantee survival.
Elsewhere, Triangle and Green Fuel square off in a direct survival shootout. Triangle need only a point, while GreenFuel must win and pray other results fall their way. Yadah, second-from-bottom on 35 points, face Simba Bhora knowing that even a win might not be enough to save them.
While the relegation drama grips the nation, the spotlight will also shine on Ascot Stadium, where champions Scottland are set to be crowned. Legendary sungura maestro Alick Macheso will provide live entertainment after Scottland’s final league match against TelOne FC — a fitting celebration for a debut-season triumph that echoes the historic feat of Black Rhinos in 1984.
Scottland’s fairy-tale run will now carry Zimbabwe’s hopes into Africa as they prepare to represent the country in next year’s Caf Champions League.
Sunday promises heartbreak and jubilation in equal measure. For Highlanders and Dynamos, survival is the only prize — and failure is not an option.
