THE Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI) employee, who appeared in court two weeks ago accused of gun smuggling, has filed a fresh bid for bail.
The suspect, Leonard Matambo, was back in court yesterday and appeared before Harare regional magistrate Taurai Manuwere. Matambo, who is now being represented by Admire Rubaya, filed the second bail bid, which he argued is based on the fluxion of time.
In the written application that was submitted yesterday, Matambo told the court that he has been in custody for over three weeks but there hasn’t been any meaningful progress in the investigations.
He further told the court that new facts have arisen in the matter which must be considered in the fresh bail bid.
Matambo is accused of attempting to facilitate the entry of 31 AK47 assault rifles and 62 magazines into the country through Beitbridge Border Post.
He is charged with conspiracy to smuggling and conspiracy to possession of dangerous weapons or alternatively violating the Firearms Act.
He allegedly wrote a letter to Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) instructing them to release the weapons without his employer’s authority.
