A HOMICIDE investigation has been launched after suspected human remains were unearthed during a football pitch levelling exercise at Mariya Primary School in Chisumbanje, Chipinge.

The remains, unearthed by 20-year-old Ashington Gumbo on 30 April, 2025, include a skull, thigh bones, and fibular bones.

Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, and said the remains were uncovered while Gumbo was digging an anthill during football pitch levelling exercise.

Gumbo reported the find to village head Aggrey Mariya, who then notified the Chisumbanje police.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said preliminary investigations revealed that the area was previously used as a “keep by the Rhodesian government” between 1976 and 1980.

“The police attended the scene on May 1, 2025, and investigations carried out revealed that the area where the remains were found was used during the colonial era as a keep by the Rhodesian government between 1976 to 1980. The suspected unidentified individual was buried at that place during that period,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Local traditional leader, Chief Musikavanhu suggested that the remains be exhumed and reburied in a manner that respects local cultural traditions.
