A 62-year-old Lupinyu man in Victoria Falls is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo after he was attacked by an elephant on Saturday, police confirmed yesterday.
Another man who was with the injured man, was lucky to escape unhurt.
Edson Shoko was attacked by the elephant which was part of a herd of elephants at around 3AM but Mike Mathe who was together with Shoko escaped unhurt.
The two are suspected to be poachers and police said investigations were underway.
Shoko was admitted to Victoria Falls District Hospital and later transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital.
Officer Commanding Victoria Falls District chief superintendent Jairos Chiwona said investigations were underway to establish circumstances leading to Shoko’s attack.
He said the two claimed they were going on a fishing expedition when they ran into a herd of elephants.
Shoko sustained deep cuts on the left side of the stomach.
A fortnight ago, a curio vendor was trampled to death by an elephant near the Big Tree in Victoria Falls.
Another man was trampled to death by another elephant in Lupinyu last month while on his way to Fuller Camp.
