Suspects in US$200 000 Beitbridge heist on bail

Rural District Council have been granted US$100 bail each by the High Court.
Memory Moyo (28), Ntuseni Mulagisi (37) and Tsepani Dube (33), who all work in the council’s finance department, are scheduled to appear at the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court on 29 September.

The fourth suspect is the council security guard who is still admitted at the Beitbridge District Hospital after police detectives allegedly assaulted him again after he was assaulted badly by the thieves.
During their initial court appearance, the defence led by Mr David Mhiribidi unsuccessfully applied for refusal of remand, with Beitbridge magistrate, Mr Carrington Karidzagundi ruling that the accused had a case to answer.

Prosecutor, Mr Reason Mutimba, told the court that the four connived with other suspects who are still at large to steal from the local authority.
They informed the other accomplices that they were holding large amounts of money. Mr Mutimba said Moyo, Mulagisi and Dube did all the planning for the successful break-in.

A total of US$200 000 was stolen from the council strong room after the other accomplices “overpowered” the security guard who they handcuffed with his own cuffs.
The gang then broke into the safe using an electric grinder and stole the cash box containing the money.
