THE Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe board chairperson Mrs Nonkosi Ncube says the promotion of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Zimbabwe focuses on a Business Implementation Study and represents a critical step towards promoting sustainable aviation and addressing climate change challenges within the aviation sector.

She was speaking during a two-day Business Implementation Study Workshop for the promotion of Sustainable Aviation Fuels in Zimbabwe under the assistance of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

“Zimbabwe has been actively participating in various environmental protection initiatives in aviation in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal number 13- Climate Action,” she said.

“Our commitment to Climate Action is evident through our engagement in International projects aimed at reducing carbon dioxide and fostering a sustainable aviation ecosystem.”

She said one such significant initiative is the ICAO Assistance Project, funded by the European Union under the Capacity Building for Carbon Dioxide Mitigation from International Aviation.

Mrs Ncube said this program has supported 10 beneficiary states including Zimbabwe, in building essential capabilities for carbon reduction in aviation.

“We were privileged to host a successful regional seminar as part of this project, an event that underscored our commitment to sustainable aviation practices,” she said.

“Following the seminar, Zimbabwe was selected for a feasibility study, marking a significant milestone in our environmental journey,” she said.

Mrs Ncube said the workshop represents another vital collaboration, bringing together expertise for ICAO, the United Kingdom and their national stakeholders to explore actionable pathways for implementing Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiatives.

“Sustainable Aviation Fuels hold enormous potential to transform the aviation industry and reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly,” she said.

“This Business Implementation Study represents a significant milestone in our journey toward sustainable aviation. Our objectives are clear: Assess Zimbabwe’s SAF market potential, develop a business case for SAF investment, and identify policy and regulatory frameworks to support SAF growth.”
