GEO POMONA Waste Management is committed to setting the standards for sustainable public-private-partnerships in Zimbabwe, the company executive chairman and chief executive officer, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, has said.
Speaking at the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) summit currently underway in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr Nguwaya said sustainable waste management solutions were globally imperative.
“Our project aims to reform Pomona into a modern urban waste management facility for the City of Harare and its residents, elevating the city’s waste disposal capabilities to modern standards.
“Our vision is to be the best and most efficient waste-to-energy plant in Africa and beyond, setting the standards for public-private partnerships that deliver a better and more sustainable life for all citizens,” he said.
As he took the waste management facility to the global stage, Dr Nguwaya said Geo Pomona was committed to playing its part to return Harare to retain its sunshine city status.
“Our project was granted national project status by the Government of Zimbabwe, affirming its strategic importance to Zimbabwe’s sustainable development and environmental management goals.
“Our mission is to operate a world-class international rated waste management and power generation enterprise.
“We will collaborate and partner with our diverse stakeholders to ensure sustainable long-term benefits for all communities and generations to come,” he said.
Dr Nguwaya explained how the firm was enabling Zimbabwe’s goal of attaining upper-middle-income economic status by 2030.
“ Challenges previously faced at the infamous Pomona dump site in Harare…lack of access roads, more than 1 000 families lived in the dumpsite, which was a huge health hazard to them (and) some of them are now working at Geo Pomona waste management, and some of them have been relocated by the Government of Zimbabwe to a safer place,” said the executive chairman and chief executive officer.
