THE MASHONALAND West Handball Association are expected to host an International Level One coaching course in May in an effort to promote the development of the game in their province.The course will be conducted by a top Swedish instructor, Henrick Signell, from May 29 to April 4.
Signell is expected to arrive in the country on May 27 with the first course pencilled for May 29 to 31 at Cornway College. The second course will be held at Jameson High and Sir John Kennedy Primary School in Kadoma.
Signell has been involved in handball for quite sometime having played in the highest division for 11 years in Sweden and has 81 international caps.
He has been a trainer for eight years and has won some medals with the junior team in the Swedish Championships and with the men’s and women’s teams as well.
And Mashonaland West Handball Association chairperson, Lillian Chiketa, said they are hoping the course will take the sport in their province to another level since it will expose their coaches to the highest level of training and heighten awareness of the game in the province.
“We thought that we are lagging behind in terms of spreading the game. We have been to Sweden and witnessed high level of competition out there and we thought if we expose our players to a high level of coaching we won’t be found wanting. Our children have the stamina but they lack the skill so if we have the course it means will be able to put them at a higher level.
“Technically I can’t say what they will be focusing on that but I am sure they will be looking at coaching, how to coach and how to actually make a skilled player,” said Chiketa.
Chiketa said they are targeting 50 participants from the province but they are also hoping that during the course teams expected to participate in the Partille Cup this year will have an opportunity to work with the international instructor.
“We hope during the coaching days he will help our teams for the Partille Cup. We have about three clubs, we may have more but for now I know that three teams will go.
“It’s going to be an international course and people that are eligible should have our local Level Two certificate, those are the ones that should be able to get into the course. We are targeting about 50 coaches and participants will pay US$100,” said Chiketa.
The Zimbabwe Handball Federation are also expected to engage the international instructor after he completes his programme in Mashonaland West.
