SWIFT donates 75 wheelchairs countrywide

KING George VI Centre in Bulawayo recently received a donation of  wheelchairs from SWIFT as part of the courier company’s 75th celebrations.

SWIFT this year celebrated its 75th year of business in Zimbabwe by reaching out to the disadvantaged members of the community and donated 75 wheelchairs and food hampers around the country.

One of the recipients of this kind gesture was King George VI Centre in Bulawayo which received four wheelchairs and goodies for their children.

In an interview with Sunday News the director of the centre, Mrs Lomaswati Mavhangira said the donation came in handy as they left a smile on the children’s faces.

“It is not every day that we receive such donations, they really came in handy. We received four wheelchairs and goodies for our children from SWIFT as part of their 75th birthday celebrations,” she said.

Mrs Mavhangira said a total of 84 children benefited from the grocery  donation.

“We shared the grocery donations among the 84 children that we have under our care, we received drinks, snacks, rice and cooking oil,” she said.

Mrs Mavhangira said with the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic crippling the economy and affecting people in various sectors, people living with disabilities were affected just as much, hence such donations go a long way in terms of motivating them and giving them assurance that they are still cared for.

“Such donations go a long way in motivating our kids, times are hard and people can hardly afford to buy these nice feeds for the kids. So we give them on the weekend and they enjoy themselves,” she said.

In a statement, SWIFT’s marketing manager Ms Lee Gibson said the company was alerted about 25 000 people living with disabilities in Zimbabwe that are in need of wheelchairs and took part in acquiring 75 for this year.

“The greatest gift that we thought we could give back was the gift of motion. After realizing that there are over 25 000 people living with disabilities in Zimbabwe we thought these 75 wheelchairs would come in handy. We wanted it to be a national rollout and we managed to reach 12 towns,” she said.
