Swimmer Nick Burnett shines in Mozambique

Zimbabwe finished fourth behind South Africa who came first, the hosts Mozambique who came second and Botswana who claimed third.
Burnett won 10 gold medals, a solitary silver medal and two bronze.

He clinched gold in the 15-16 years men’s 100 metre backstroke in 1 minute 03.36 seconds, the 50 metre breaststroke he swam in 29.36 seconds, the 200 metre freestroke he raced in 58.17 seconds and the 400 metre freestroke he won in 4 minutes 19.93 seconds.

The other big contributor was Andresious Cyprianos who contributed seven medals, two gold, a single silver and four bronze.

He clinched gold in 15-16 years men’s 200 metre butterfly stroke in 2 minutes 17.89 seconds and the 15 years and over 400m freestroke relay with Frank Lang, Trevor Price and Nicholas Burnett 3 minutes 44.05 seconds.

Liam Davis also did well as he contributed three medals, all of them gold, courtesy of wins in the 12 years and under 200 metre breaststroke in 2 minutes 57.08 seconds 100 metre breast stroke in a minute and 21.12 seconds and the 12 and under 100 metre breaststroke in a minute 21.12 seconds.

Zimbabwe swimming Board of Control chairperson Lorna Riley said she was not satisfied with clinching the fourth spot as the nation could do better than that but she however said the 21-member team had done the nation proud although their small number handicapped them.

“Fourth spot is not good enough for me but the team did well considering the small team we sent to compete against 14 other teams.”
Riley said there was need to encourage swimmers to prioritise the Cana championships as their strongest competition since the standard is high.

“The swimming standard in the Cana competitions has tremendously improved and I think we should mobilise more of our top swimmers to go and participate because of the good competition there,” she said.
She singled out Nicholas Burnett and Andresious Cyprianos who starred for Zimbabwe for praise.
