FOUR Zimbabwean swimmers will compete at the world short course championship in Doha, Qatar, from December 3-7. Two other swimmers, Liam Davis and Ratidzo Mutangadura, will take part in a youth development programme.
This will be part of the team’s preparations for the Region V Games here from December 4-14.
The four swimmers who will compete — Chad Idensohn, James Lawson, Peter Wetzlar and Robyn Lee — their two non-competing colleagues and coach, Sheelah Crause, will leave the country on November 29.
Zimbabwe Aquatic Union president, Mary Kloppers, said the swimmers were the country’s biggest medal hopefuls in the Region V Games.
“Of the six swimmers going, only four will be competing, we decided to send the other two to participate in the Youth Programme, which will expose them to the atmosphere of the competition without actually competing.
“They will also receive lectures by top-class coaches.
“We are not worried about the medals, this platform is more of an educational and preparatory tour, it will also serve as the build-up to the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.
“Our swimmers are young and this is a world competition so we are more concerned with them getting practice and exposure than medals.
“After the championships, they will be returning on December 7 to compete at the Region 5 Games, as they are our biggest medal hopefuls in Bulawayo,” said Kloppers.
