The kidnappers demanded the release of their jailed relatives from the central prison in Abyan, according to local sources.
Foreigners are frequently kidnapped in Yemen by al-Qaeda militants or tribesmen who ask for ransom or the release of their jailed colleagues. Most of the kidnapped have been freed unharmed.
On February 27, a Swiss woman held captive by Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula for one year was released through a Qatari mediation.
On May 9, a Finnish couple and an Austrian man kidnapped by the al-Qaida militants in Yemen in last December were released.
