TEHRAN – Syria’s top diplomat in Tehran dismissed western countries and media claims that Damascus has used chemical weapons against its opposition, and said Syria is in possession of strong evidence showing that the terrorists and Takfiris have used the weapons.“There are strong pieces of evidences showing that the Takfiri and terrorist groups have used chemical weapons against the Syrian army and nation with the support of the reactionary regional countries and the West,” Syrian Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mahmoud said at a forum in Tehran dubbed ‘Syria, the Fortress of Resistance’ on Tuesday.

He said since a year ago, the Syrian government was aware of the US and its allies’ plans for using chemical weapons in Syria and projecting the blame on the Damascus government. “That’s why Damascus called on the UN to send its investigation team to Syria.”

Stressing that all the US allegations on the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government are baseless, Mahmoud said, “These are considered as a preplanned excuse for justifying the US threats of aggression against Syria which reminds us of the (US) scenario in Iraq.”

Tensions rose higher in the region after US rushed to dispatch its warships toward Syria, threatening to bomb several areas in the country, based on conflicting reports of an alleged chemical attack in the country.

The US-backed militants posted pictures and videos of an alleged chemical attack two weeks ago which they claimed the Syrian army was responsible for it.

The Syrian government, which had already called for UN action against several cases of chemical attacks by anti-Syria militants in the country, rejected the claims as baseless and paved the way for a visiting UN team of inspectors to investigate the story.

Syria says the attack was actually carried out by the foreign-backed militants to open way for their western and regional supporters to attack Syria.

Despite the killing of at least 100,000 people in the massive insurgency in Syria, the US is intent on joining the conflict. – Fars News Agency.
