THE Zimbabwe Tag Rugby Trust have organised a tournament which will see more than 250 athletes play a regional tournament at Harare Sports Club today.
Participants will be drawn from Marondera, Chishawasha, Chitungwiza, Hwedza and hosts Harare.
Tag rugby team is made up of 10 players, five girls and five boys, and the teams participating will come from both schools and tag rugby centres.
Since the beginning of the year, these teams went through qualifying tournaments in their respective areas and this tournament will see the top teams qualifying for a national tournament.
Teams in Harare will come from Mbare, Hatfield, Mabvuku, Glen View and Chitungwiza while the Marondera teams will come from Cherutombo and Nyameni.
In Hwedza teams will be coming from Fels Primary School.
Players from Glen View and Chitungwiza academies are likely to give some competition to the visiting teams.
Tag rugby exists to create a bridge between aspiring rugby players from non-contact to contact rugby. Contact rugby has lost a lot of would be players because of its physical demands on the body.
Zimbabwe Tag Rugby Trust manager Tinashe Shamu said all the preparations ahead of this weekend’s tournament are going on well and all the teams have confirmed their participation.
“We are happy and looking forward to the tournament, it is one of an important step to take at grassroots for one to become familiar with the sport.
“The tournament will allows anyone interested to learn about the sports without having to worry about the physical demands of the full sport.
“I believe that tag rugby is important tool in developing rugby with children as it is both fun, allows both boys and girls playing together and all this in a safe environment.
