Takarenyi beats over 600 athletes in Beitbridge marathon

OVER 600 athletes from across the country turned up for the Vice-President Kembo Mohadi half-marathon being held along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Highway.

The Run for Hope Marathon was held to promote a healthy culture and to raise awareness on drug and substance abuse.

The run was a precursor to the commissioning of the rehabilitated Mtetengwe Primary School, in Ward 7, which is VP Mohadi’s home village.

There was also free medical screening and training of villagers and different stakeholders from the rapid disaster response committees on basic first aid skills by Discovery Ambulances.

The races included 21.1km, 10km, 5km and 3km.

All the races started and ended at Mtetengwe Primary School.

Long distance athlete Moses Tarakinyu of Black Rhinos Club was crowned the champion in the 21,1km half-marathon.

He crossed the finishing line after 1 hour 07 minutes 47 seconds, followed by fellow team member Tatenda Hove and Jonathan Chinyoka of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, in second and third positions                      respectively.

In the female category, Philipa Dube of ZRP athletics club came out victorious with fellow police officers, Anni Chirisa and Thobekile Ncube in tow.

Black Rhinos duo of Tatenda Hove and Martin Masapa came up in second and third positions in the 10km race won by Andrew Ndlovu of Blanket Mine Athletics Club.

Angela Moyo of Black Rhinos won the women’s 10km race followed by Lisede Nkomo of Mr Sinkwa and Florence Everest of Black Rhinos.

In the Paralympics race Thandiwe Ndlovu and Magret Pangajena were crowned winners in the female category while Marclean Ali, Samson Muroyiwa and Elford Moyo were victorious in the men’s category.
