Taking the Michael

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Lisandro Martinez was blanked by Michael Carrick after conceding a penalty and receiving two yellow cards in the space of 82 seconds.
It looks to be doomsday for Carrick after his team imploded and lost 2-0 to Chelsea.
If Morgan Rogers walking through the United defence to open the scoring wasn’t enough, it was compounded by a moment of madness by Martinez.
The Argentinian, who recently hit out at the United board, wildly went for Wesley Fofana at a corner. It came just 82 seconds after he had been booked Martinez for fouling Morgan Rogers.
Following a VAR check the penalty was awarded and ‘the butcher’ was given his marching orders. And as he left the pitch, his under-fire gaffer had no interest in looking up.
When asked whether he felt let down by experienced players like Martinez, Carrick bluntly replied: “No.”
But Peter Schmeichel fumed: “I put this solely on Lisandro Martinez’s shoulder, this is an absolute disgrace how he played this game.
“Two weeks ago he made some very, very strong statements against his team-mates, against the football club, and it felt like he was trying to orchestrate a move. He’s in his last year of his contract. What he did today, honestly I have no words.”
Ten man United, whose fans poured out of Stamford Bridge early, then conceded a third, but the offside flag saved them and prevented Estevao for the second time in the game.
And after overseeing a NINTH game without a win, there is surely no way back for Carrick. He was given a lifeline as the Red Devils opted to stick with him, despite a run of EIGHT games without a win.
United sources said Carrick will have the opportunity to turn the situation around, despite eight games without a win and the club 16th in the table. But now that horrendous run has extended even further and off the back of three consecutive defeats, it’s difficult to see the United legend lasting much longer.
Martinez, meanwhile, looks set to leave United next summer.
His contract is up in June 2027 and the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
But that looks unlikely after his rant at director of football Jason Wilcox.
