Tambarimba redefines marimba sound

and around Harare, the band of five impressed revellers recently at the Book Café and according to the band manager Don “Chidaz” Chidavaenzi, plans are underway to give the group a permanent slot at the entertainment spot.

“The youthful band has managed to sustain its upward trend due to their perseverance and hard work. They have now managed to grow and have mastered diversified types of music on the marimba instrument” said Chidavaenzi.

Their trademark marimba band brings in a unique blend to Zimbabwean music that is slowly becoming a powerhouse of African music.

They join dominant forces Chiwoniso Maraire, Tonga band Mokoomba among others.
The name Tambarimba stems from the Shona words “tamba marimba”, meaning dancing to marimba music.

The group was assembled in 2010, when the band members were still in high school.
One of the members, Martin Nyirenda, brings his global experience through his experiences at international forums like the Switzerland International Festival of Arts and the Harare International Festival of Arts. Nyirenda now known as “Coach” due to his leadership role in the group said the group is set to launch an album in June this year.

“We are currently working on an album and from the progress that we have made, we are certain that it will carve our name on the regional and international scene.

“Over the past months we have built a strong fan base and with our unique sound our album is going to excite our followers even more,” he said.
