MORE than 1 500 athletes will today gather at the starting line of the Tanganda Tea Half-Marathon when of Zimbabwe’s top long-distance races explodes into life.
The race traditionaly attracts both professional and budding runners.
Preparations for the half-marathon got underway last month with Manicaland Athletics Board chair Joshua “Zesa” Matume saying all efforts were being made to ensure this year’s race would be the best yet.
“We are actually expecting more than 1 500 athletes, one of our biggest numbers, for this year’s event,” said Matume. “We have also invited all clubs, and primary schools and secondary schools to send their athletes since we are going to have races for all these age groups.
“We are going to have a 2km race for the Under-14s, giving primary schools a chance to showcase their talent; while secondary schools can also field their athletes in the 5,25km race. Some athletes from secondary schools as well as clubs can also take part in the 21km main event.
“In short, it promises to be quite an exciting event this year and we applaud the sponsors for increasing the package after a successful event last year.”
Matume would not disclose the actual sponsorship figures.
A highlight will be the 5,25km relay race as well as the 10km fun run that is meant for all interested athletes who do not want to race in the 21km half-marathon.
The half-marathon will see athletes start the race at Tanganda Tea Company’s premises, run along Park Road to Morningside and then turn at the roundabout near Mutare Boys High to Dominican Convent.
