TANGANDA Tea Company Limited says erratic rainfall patterns during the 2023-24 cropping season led to an 8,96 percent decline in bulk tea production from 5 582 tonnes to 5 082 tonnes.
The 2023-24 cropping season was characterised by unevenly distributed below-normal rainfall.
Bulk tea exports also declined by 12 percent from 3 415 tonnes to 3 005 tonnes.
Coffee exports rose to 58 tonnes, 32 percent more than the 44 tonnes achieved during the same period last year.
“Bulk tea exports of 3 005 tonnes were 12 percent below the previous year’s 3 415 tonnes,” said Tanganda chairperson, Mr Herbert Nkala in the company’s half-year financials to March 2024.
“The average export selling price of bulk tea declined to US$1,38 per kg from the prior year’s average selling price of US$1, 45 per kg.”
Mr Nkala said the packed tea exports within the region registered a 78 percent increase over the previous year following the diversification of its exports into the Democratic Republic of Congo.
