WARRIORS interim coach, Jairos Tapera, has confirmed plans to hand Polokwane City forward, Douglas Mapfumo, his debut tomorrow in their heavyweight 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier clash against South Africa at Free State Stadium.
The 24-year-old earned a call-up to the senior team as a reward to his decent season with the Rise and Shine.
“I still believe our scoreline against Lesotho doesn’t reflect how we played, but I also feel like we lacked concentration in key moments, something which proved costly.
“We definitely going to make some changes to give an opportunity to some of the players at our disposal to see what they can bring to the table.
“Mapfumo has been impressive at training and he is one of the players under consideration to start against Bafana Bafana because we can only win by scoring more goals than our opponents,” said Tapera.
Mapfumo formed a good partnership in powering Polokwane City to secure a top eight spot with Oswin Appollis in their return to the DStv Premiership.
Appollis finished as the team’s top goal-scorer after finding the net six times just two above Mapfumo.
He was handed some minutes when Bafana Bafana battled to a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier group C fixture. This are likely going to battle for a different cause for the first time in the region’s blockbuster.
