TAPFUMA Parirenyatwa has resigned as Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) acting president, effective end of the month.
Parirenyatwa, who was vice-president north, took over as the interim rugby boss following the suspension of Losson Mtongwiza in May.
His decision to step down comes barely a month after leading the Zimbabwean delegation to back to back Africa Cups and World Cup qualification.
Parirenyatwa cited the need to focus on his growing business and family as the reason behind the resignation.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but I am aware of the level of commitment that this role requires for it to be performed effectively.
And because of where my career currently stands, I need to focus more on developing my businesses and on time with my family, and this, therefore, means I will no longer be able to give this crucial role the attention and dedication that it requires and deserves.
“It has been my greatest honour to serve my country through my involvement in various capacities in a sport that I hold dear to my heart, with my main goal being finding the best means of elevating the sport of rugby and taking it to higher heights than I found it when I joined it at the national level.
I believe that with the Sables’ recent victory in Uganda and the new international visibility this has brought to Zimbabwean rugby, it is the ideal time for me to step down and allow someone who can give this role the devotion it deserves to take over,” read his resignation letter.
Parirenyatwa will also be dissolving the Sables Trust to allow for the new president to select a new board.
“I will also be dissolving the Zimbabwe Rugby Trust to allow the incoming president to elect a new Trust, and the
current Trust members are readily available for the relevant handover and takeover procedures.
“My resignation will be effective thirty days from the date of this letter. I stand guided by the constitution, but I
suggest that after these thirty days, fresh elections for the position are called for, in which I will not stand as a
candidate.
Whilst I will no longer be on the frontlines of rugby management, I will remain an avid supporter. I will simply do it from the sidelines.
Mtongwiza is set to go for a hearing on Monday.
