TATENDA Tanyanyiwa returns with a new book, this time delving into themes of spiritual warfare, generational legacy, identity, faith, and courage in a gripping work of spiritual fiction titled The Demon Slayer – Nga Awakens.

Her latest offering, released eight years after her debut publication, follows the journey of a young girl named Nga, whose vivid dreams and spiritual encounters draw her into a hidden battle between darkness and light.

Through Nga’s experiences, Tanyanyiwa explores a realm where dreams, visions, and unseen spiritual forces shape the human journey, while emphasising the strength of faith, prayer, and courage in overcoming darkness.

The Bulawayo-based author said the story centres on a young girl who gradually learns that her unusual spiritual sensitivity is part of a deeper calling rooted in her bloodline.

The book, set to launch on 27 March, blends elements of African storytelling traditions with Christian faith, creating a narrative that reflects experiences familiar to many Zimbabweans.

Tanyanyiwa said her inspiration stems from childhood memories of listening to her mother’s fireside stories, as well as her own fascination with the spiritual dimension of life.

“As children, my mother would often tell us stories while we sat around the fireside or did chores together. Those moments shaped my imagination and love for storytelling. Over the years, I also became deeply interested in how dreams, faith, and unseen battles influence the human journey. The Demon Slayer was born from that intersection of childhood storytelling and spiritual reflection,” she said.

Beyond writing, Tanyanyiwa is a human resources professional with extensive experience. She said her work in the field has given her a deeper understanding of people, a quality that also informs her writing.

She also revealed that the eight-year gap between her books – her first being Tate’s Healing Journey – was a period of significant personal and spiritual growth.

“The eight years were not empty. They were years of growth, reflection and life experience. During that time, I was developing professionally, raising a family and deepening my faith journey. Those experiences gave me the maturity and perspective needed to write a story like The Demon Slayer,” she said.

In the book, demons are portrayed both as literal spiritual forces and as symbolic representations of fear, generational curses, and spiritual oppression. For Tanyanyiwa, the concept of a “demon slayer” is rooted in confronting these challenges through faith and courage.

“The title represents the battle every human being faces against forces that try to limit their life. A demon slayer is someone who refuses to be controlled by fear, lies, or oppression and instead rises into their identity and authority through faith,” she said.

Despite engaging with themes of darkness, the author said the story’s central message remains one of hope.
“I hope readers come away with courage and hope. Even though the story deals with spiritual battles, its core message is that light always wins,” she said.

The Demon Slayer – Nga Awakens is the first instalment in a planned series titled The Riftwalker Saga, which will continue to follow Nga’s evolution as she grows into her spiritual calling and grapples with deeper mysteries and battles.

Outside writing, Tanyanyiwa has expressed her creativity through music and devotional work. She is the author of Tate’s Healing Journey and the recording artist behind songs such as Love Song for You and the worship single Mandiponesa, Mandiporesa.
