A MAN who last week allegedly killed a taxi driver in cold blood in Gweru and drove off in his Honda Fit appeared in court on Thursday.

Calton Chido Magadu (26) of house number 49 Tsoka Road Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza, appeared before Gweru Magistrate Ms Mildred Matuvi facing murder charges.

He was not asked to plead and remanded in custody to April 19. Ms Matuvi advised Magadu to apply for bail at the High Court.

It is the State’s case that on March 26, Magadu hired Garikai Mashame from Gweru Central Business District (CBD) purporting to be going to Mkoba 6 Shopping Centre.

The court heard that when they arrived at the agreed destination, Magadu asked Mashame to proceed to Mkoba 3 saying he wanted to pick up his relatives.

It is alleged that when the two got to Mkoba 3, they both disembarked from the vehicle and Magadu abruptly got into the car intending to drive off.

Mashame allegedly pulled him out of the vehicle.

A scuffle ensued during which Magadu stabbed Mashame three times with an Okapi knife on the neck, chest and ripped open his stomach.

Magadu allegedly drove away in Mashame’s car and dumped it at Gweru Main Street Bar after it ran out of fuel.

Mashame is said to have walked about 100m from the scene before collapsing while bleeding profusely.

He was discovered by a passerby who called an ambulance. Mashame was pronounced dead on arrival at Gweru Provincial Hospital.

Magadu surrendered himself to the police on April 3.

Ms Hellen Khosa appeared for the State.
