A DRAMATIC scene unfolded at Mutare Civil Court recently, as Shalom Muzuro sought US$4 500 compensation from Archford Nyagweta – a taxi driver who allegedly ran over her with his vehicle.
The incident occurred when Shalom had boarded Nyagweta’s cab and was dropped off at her destination.
However, in a bizarre twist, Nyagweta ran over Shalom while trying to escape from traffic police officers who were conducting an operation in the area.
Mutare magistrate, Ms Prisca Manhibi presided over the matter.
Shalom claimed that although Nyagweta took care of some hospital bills, it was not enough as she still has additional checkups to be done.
A medical report from an unnamed private clinic was produced, stating that Shalom’s spinal code was fractured and required surgery.
Shalom alleged that Nyagweta did not attend to her immediately after the incident.
Instead, he tried to flee from the scene, but was unsuccessful, and that is when he returned and offered to take her to hospital.
She further expressed her frustration at Nyagweta’s conduct.
“I have been trying to contact Nyagweta, but he seems to be ignoring my calls. I have also reached out to his father, who is seemingly doing the same,” she said.
In his defence, Nyagweta claimed that the accident was not intentional, and has been assisting her with hospital bills.
Nyagweta claimed that Shalom had already disembarked at her destination, but did not notice when she tried to get back into the vehicle while it was already in motion.
“I had already dropped her and I did not see her trying to board the vehicle again,” he said.
Ms Manhibi urged both parties to reach an agreement.
She cautioned Nyagweta that failure to do so would attract an imprisonment sentence.
