FROM the streets of Harare to the blinding lights of the world’s fashion capitals, designer Tayamaeca Mahachi Hughes is proving that African creativity belongs on the grand stages.

She delivered a powerful, emotionally-charged showcase at the London Fashion Week.

Held at Protein Studios, Shoreditch, London, under the theme, ‘‘An Anthropology of African Stories — The People, The Land, The Stories’’, Harare-born Tayamaeca lit up the runway with a deeply personal collection that did more than just clothe models.

It told a Zimbabwean story on a global platform dominated by fashion powerhouses.

In an interview with Zimpapers Entertainment Hub, she said she was happy to take part at the one of the most prestigious fashion shows in the world.

“This moment is everything to me,” Tayamaeca said. “To come from Harare, live in Liverpool, and stand here at London Fashion Week representing Zimbabwe is overwhelming. This is bigger than fashion — this is identity.”

Showcasing on the official schedule through Fashion Scout, in collaboration with UDGN, Tayamaeca was part of a curated African designers’ presentation celebrating minority voices.

Designers from Nigeria, Ghana, and Zimbabwe shared the platform with Tayamaeca, proudly flying the national flag. Her safari-inspired collection rejected tired stereotypes and animal-print clichés, choosing instead to communicate emotion, memory and respect for land. “I didn’t want to do what people expect when they hear ‘safari’,” she said.

“I wanted people to feel what it’s like to be there, the stillness, the power, the emotion.”

Golden browns echoed African sunsets, earthy tones reflected soil and land, while deep midnight blues captured the African night sky reflecting on water.

“That blue is Africa at night,” Tayamaeca said. “You don’t see that in Europe. It’s spiritual.”

The sculptural headpieces, inspired by safari lodge interiors, anchored the collection and guided the garment design, while the autumn/winter fabrics showed technical maturity and thoughtful translation of African storytelling into global fashion language.

The runway opened with a striking one-minute teaser video delivered in Shona, immediately grounding the show in Zimbabwean heritage.

“Zimbabwe will always direct my work,” she said. “No matter where I am, my roots stay visible.”

The reception was electric.

Zimbabweans in the audience expressed pride while industry insiders praised the originality and restraint of the storytelling.

“When your own people show up for you on a global stage, it means everything,” Tayamaeca said.

This was no ordinary crowd.

Tayamaeca’s showcase drew an elite, invite-only audience including London Fashion Week buyers, international fashion editors, stylists, PR executives, and creative directors from leading fashion houses.

Senior representatives from Fashion Scout, influential European fashion media, and established designers working the London circuit were present.

Also in attendance were key figures from the Zimbabwe fashion industry, including representatives from the Zimbabwe Fashion Council, alongside African creatives and diaspora leaders based in the UK.

Notably, respected fashion professionals who have worked across multiple London Fashion Week seasons made time to attend Tayamaeca’s show, a rare nod of recognition for a Zimbabwean designer on such a competitive platform.

“This wasn’t just support — it was validation,” Tayamaeca said.

“To have people who shape global fashion sit and listen to your story is powerful.”
