Government is considering constructing a hospital to cater for tuberculosis patients in Chitungwiza to minimise travelling inconveniences to Harare where there are two council hospitals treating the disease.This was revealed by Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa yesterday during the belated commemorations of World TB Day at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
Dr Parirenyatwa urged Chitungwiza medical directorate and the Harare medical directorate to start working towards that initiative.
“We were told that here in Chitungwiza, you also need a hospital like Wilkins and Beatrice infectious diseases hospitals because it is now a big town requiring its own services,” he said.
Dr Parirenyatwa expressed concern over the increase in the number of patients suffering from drug resistant TB, with more than 253 cases having been recorded in 2013. He said in 2010 there were 29 patients with the type of TB before the figure shot up.
Dr Parirenyatwa said more TB cases were being diagnosed because of an increasing capacity to detect the disease.
