BULAWAYO residents came out in full force on 14 November for the “Hope in a Mug Tea” gathering, a warm community event hosted by the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe (CAZ) in partnership with General Health at the organisation’s offices on Masotsha and Fife Street.

Survivors, caregivers and everyday residents filled the courtyard, sharing tea, stories and solidarity. Tables were beautifully decorated with themed cakes, cupcakes, tea cups and the signature cancer awareness ribbon, creating a comforting space where people could sit, chat and reflect.

One survivor, who chose to remain anonymous, said the gathering brought healing. “It feels good to be among people who understand what you’re going through. Events like this remind you that you’re not alone,” she said.

Attendees discussed cancer prevention, treatment options and the importance of community support while enjoying the light refreshments. The event’s $2 entry fee went straight into CAZ’s cancer support programmes, reinforcing the organisation’s mission to uplift those affected by the disease.

Organisers said the goal was to create an inclusive space where people touched by cancer could feel seen, heard and supported. They described the morning as a reminder that small contributions and shared conversations can make a meaningful difference.

Established in 1968, CAZ remains one of Zimbabwe’s leading organisations in cancer awareness, prevention and support. Its work includes screening initiatives, survivor support groups, public awareness campaigns and ongoing fundraising efforts that help patients and families navigate the difficult journey of diagnosis and care.

CAZ also offers counselling, educational materials and assistance for caregivers, ensuring that emotional, physical and informational needs are met. Through partnerships with communities, schools and organisations, CAZ continues to champion early detection, health literacy and stigma reduction, solidifying its role as a pillar of cancer support in Zimbabwe.
