A teacher at Drake High School in Redcliff is battling for life at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare after he was seriously attacked by a machete on Tuesday evening while coming from a beer drink.
The teacher, only identified as Mr Musvora, becomes the latest victim of machete wars that have erupted in the area involving rival illegal gold panners.
Although Midlands acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said she was yet to receive the report, Redcliff Deputy Mayor Councillor Vincent Masiiwa confirmed the incident, adding that it was unfortunate machete wars were on the rise in the area.
“It is unfortunate that such things are still happening in our society. Given that the teacher did not provoke anyone, and was attacked for no reason, this is sickening,” said Clr Masiiwa.
He said on the day, Mr Musvora was drinking alone while his would-be attackers were also drinking separately in the same bar.
Clr Masiiwa said members of the group started arguing among themselves and started fighting. At that time the teacher sensed danger and decided to leave the place. However, the group ganged up against the teacher who was trying to make his way home.
“It seems they were targeting him for yet to be known reasons because it was a plan that they acted as if they were fighting as a plan to ambush him,” he said.
Last Saturday, Torwood resembled a war zone as two groups of machete wielding artisanal gold miners clashed in the suburb.
Reports are that a group that hails from Grasslands, a resettlement area near Torwood, was defending its territory from a group based in Mbizo that is seeking to occupy their mining area. A number of people were injured in the running battles.
