A WHIRLWIND on Monday afternoon blew off roofing sheets from three classroom blocks at Chitsva Primary School in Makoni District, leaving one learner seriously injured and several others with minor bruises.
The incident occurred when strong winds tore roofing material from the classroom blocks, forcing learners and teachers to run for safety.
Unfortunately, a learner was struck on the head by a piece of asbestos sheeting.
The injured learner was treated and discharged at the local clinic.
Makoni Rural District Council chief executive officer, Engineer Edmore Chidembo, said the damage to infrastructure was significant and will require substantial funds to rehabilitate. The destruction is likely to cause classroom shortages, especially during the rainy season if not attended to.
“Three classroom blocks at Chitsva Primary School were affected by the strong wind. We have sent our team to assess the situation and how we can assist as the Responsible Authority. The incident resulted in the displacement, lifting and breakage of asbestos roofing sheets and ridge coverings on the blocks. Four classrooms were observed to be developing cracks at wall joints. This will be a long-term rehabilitation programme to be done over the school holiday,” he said.
