A PRIMARY school teacher stationed at Tanganda in Chipinge who was wanted by police for allegedly fondling a pupil was found dead on Wednesday in a suspected case of suicide.
Emmanuel Shenjere (43) was found dead along Maurende Stream in Marwendo Village.
A source who declined to be named said Shenjere, who is a Grade Seven teacher, was accused of fondling a pupil.
“A juvenile in his class had accused him of fondling her and reported the matter to her grandmother. The grandmother approached Shenjere early this week at Tanganda Primary to try and get to the bottom of the matter, but he turned them away. She reported the matter to the police and a girl-child organisation that pressured for Shenjere’s arrest,” said the source.
Chipinge District police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Jowert Kamera confirmed the incident.
“On January 25, police from Middle Sabi proceeded to Shenjere’s homestead at Tanganda Primary School to question him as part of investigations into a case of indecent assault that had been reported against him on the same day. He could not be located that night.
“On the following day, Shenjere’s body was found on a stream in Maurede Village by Beauty Sithole who was fetching firewood. She immediately informed his wife, Susan Hlangani (43),” said Assistant Inspector Kamera.
Police attended the scene and discovered a two litre container which was smelling of an unknown poisonous substance near Shenjere’s body.
“Police examined the body and no visible injuries were observed, but the body was smelling of an unknown poisonous substance. Investigations to establish the cause of the death are still underway,” said Assistant Inspector Kamera.
Shenjere was buried last Friday at his rural home in Zaka.
