A SCHOOL teacher, who was taken to the maintenance court by his former wife, shocked the gallery when he offered $8 000 for the upkeep of his seven-year-old child.
Kudzai Mavhera made an application claiming $204 000 for the upkeep of the child from her ex-husband, Farai Bureni.
Bureni offered $8 000 saying it can “buy a lot”.
“My offer is $8 000. It can buy a lot such as cooking oil, bath soap, mealie-meal and lotion,” he said.
Magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini asked Bureni what he wants to give his child from the allowances he gets as a civil servant, and he said US$10.
“I will pay US$10 from the allowances I get,” he said.
Mavhera scoffed at the offer saying it was a joke.
“The child needs US$35 school fees per month.
“When it comes to the payment of the school fees, he can pay, but I do not want any communication with him because he talks rubbish most of the times,” she said.
Magistrate Dhlamini ordered Bureni to pay $20 000 and US$40 in addition school fees and buying uniforms.
