Teachers’ union unveils social welfare plan

THE Educators union of Zimbabwe (EUZ) has rolled out welfare packages for teachers, including expanded funeral cover and land ownership schemes, aimed at complementing the Government’s efforts in improving the status of the educators.

Speaking at the union’s annual general meeting in Harare, which ended yesterday, EUZ president, Mrs Tafadzwa Chikwangwani, said:

“In our culture, funerals expose us the most. Imagine being a son-in-law who has lost a father-in-law. All you can do is cry. But with our union’s support, you arrive at the funeral with dignity.

“The same goes for a parent who has lost a child, or a teacher who has lost a spouse. The financial cushion we provide helps restore that lost dignity.”

Mrs Chikwangwani said the initiatives were rooted in both the Government and the union’s founding principles of teacher emancipation.

“When we started, it was just a movement. Today, it is a union. And that vision to restore the dignity of the teacher is still alive, which we think we and the Government can help restore if we work together, not against each other,” she said.”
