Team studies Chitungwiza’s ability to have own water source

Harare occasionally cuts supplies to Chitungwiza to force it to pay.
Manicaland provincial administrator Mr Fungai Mbetsa leads the resuscitation team.
“It is the team’s desire to engage Harare City Council and Zinwa with a proposal for the handover of the water system which supplies water to Chitungwiza.
“To that extent the team is proposing a team of technical officials from the City of Harare, Ministry of Water, Zinwa and Chitungwiza Municipality to look into the feasibility of this proposal,” he said.
Mr Mbetsa said the study will not be limited to the Prince Edward Water Treatment Plant but will also look into the feasibility of establishing a water treatment plant on Nyatsime River.
He said the fact that Harare controls Chitungwiza’s water supply made it difficult for the council to plan properly. At the moment Chitungwiza is paying US$50 000 every fortnight to settle the water bill.
Harare Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda has already hinted on the possibility of handing over the water treatment plant to Chitungwiza.
He gave the hint last year when he asked Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to use his influence in Government to ensure that Government reverses its earlier resolution to take over the construction of Kunzvi Dam.
