A BULAWAYO teenager is headed to prison for five years after he was caught red-handed with stolen copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).
Zithelo Moyo (19) of Entumbane suburb was convicted by magistrate Taurai Manuwere, who ripped into the ‘evil practice’ of stealing power cables.
“Copper theft is crippling service delivery across the country. This court will not go soft on offenders,” said the magistrate.
Police swooped in on June 24 after a tip-off that Moyo was stashing stolen copper at his house.
Officers raided the property and found 3.25kg of copper cables hidden inside. Moyo could not explain how he got them and was immediately arrested.
He was found guilty of violating a section of the Electricity Act, which forbids illegal possession of copper.
With power cuts already tormenting the city, authorities say cable thieves like Moyo are making things worse.
Now he’ll be powering prison lights instead.
