A 19-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo teenager has been sentenced to 420 hours of community service after she stabbed her neighbour with an okapi knife following a misunderstanding.
Etheldreda Nyathi of Nkosilathi Upper Rangemore suburb was convicted of assault when she appeared before Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube.
Nyathi was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment, with six months suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence during that period. The remaining 12 months were wholly suspended on condition that she completes 420 hours of community service at Emganwini Secondary School, starting today.
Prosecuting, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that the incident occurred on December 3 last year at around 7 PM when the complainant, Ms Consisters Sibanda (22), went to Nyathi’s residence to collect her clothes.
The court heard that a misunderstanding arose between the two, during which Nyathi produced an okapi knife and stabbed Ms Sibanda twice on the left breast and twice on the left side of the back.
Ms Sibanda sustained injuries and later reported the matter to the police, leading to Nyathi’s arrest.
