TWO Bulawayo teenagers who stole a client’s vehicle from their workplace and went on a reckless joyride that ended in the death of Zimpapers driver Silas Bhunu have been jailed.

Melusi Nkomo (19) of Nketa 6 and Shelton Dube (19) of Nkulumane were each sentenced to six months in prison by Western Commonage magistrate Archie Wochiwunga after pleading guilty to unauthorised borrowing or use of property.

Three months were suspended for three years on condition they do not commit a similar offence.

Prosecutor Audrey Kufandikanwe told the court the pair took the vehicle after hours on August 2 from a Kelvin North industrial company where they worked.

“They drove into the city without the owner’s consent and were later involved in a fatal accident that killed Bhunu, who was on duty delivering newspapers on a motorbike,” said Kufandikanwe.

The stolen GD6 Toyota Hilux was extensively damaged.

Nkomo will return to court on August 21 to face a separate charge of culpable homicide over Bhunu’s death.
