The toddler sustained serious head injuries, which led to her death the following day. Memory Nyika of Number 173 Glen Norah A was not asked to plead to murder charges when she appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei.

Ironically Nyika, who was wearing a “happy face” in the dock, was holding her own baby during court proceedings.
Nyika was remanded in custody to August 26 for routine remand. Mr Ndirowei advised her to apply for bail at the High Court due to the seriousness of the offence.
“Ndekupi kuHigh Court kwacho (Where is the High Court?),” Nyika asked the interpreter.

She was told the prison officers would help her.
Prosecutor Ms Svodai Kadivirire alleged that on August 5 this year, Nyika beat her step-daughter with a stick all over the body. She accused her of deliberately soiling her pants.
The girl died the following morning due to the serious head injuries she sustained. People who witnessed the assault reported the matter to the police.

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old woman has appeared before the same magistrate after allegedly killing her drinking partner. Memory Shiriinorira of 721 Makomo Street, Epworth was not asked to plead to the charge when she appeared before Mr Ndirowei.
Due to the seriousness of her offence, Shiriinorira was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

She will be back in court on August 24 for routine remand. Shiriinorira committed the offence on July 11 this year and was on the run for three weeks before surrendering herself to the police on August 1.

Prosecutor Ms Kadivirire alleges that on July 11, Shiriinorira had a disagreement with an unnamed man she was having alcoholic drinks with. It is alleged the two fought and the man ran out of the bar with Shiriinorira in pursuit. Shiriinorira allegedly picked a brick and hit the man on the head just above the right ear and he fell. Shiriinorira disappeared from the scene as Good Samaritans took the man to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, it is alleged.
Postmortem results revealed that the man died from the head injuries.
