MANDISA Mdhluli (16) of Tennyson Hlabangana High School, who was crowned Face of Bulawayo 2025 at a glittering event held at the Bulawayo Theatre on Sunday night, has pledged to use her title to drive meaningful change within her community.
Her triumph was not merely a celebration of beauty and culture, but also marked the revival of a pageant with purpose — one that champions empowerment and raises awareness in the fight against breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Following a six-year hiatus, the Miss Face of Bulawayo pageant returned under the theme “Taking Stride Against Breast Cancer”. 13 contestants competed across various categories, including Designer Wear, Avant-Garde, African Idol and Evening Wear.
A distinguished panel of judges – comprising wardrobe stylist Ruth Nyoni, Mr School of Mines Javas, Mr Earth Zimbabwe Mzolisi Zibusiso, and beauty therapist/influencer Alleta Nyathi — presided over the competition, which culminated in Mdhluli’s crowning moment. Vanessa Ndlovu was named first Princess, Andile Sibindi second Princess, while Michaella de Necker received the
People’s Choice Award.
Mdhluli, who credits her sister Memory Mdhluli for mentoring her in modelling since 2023, described the experience as surreal.
“Hearing my name announced as the winner of Face of Bulawayo filled me with overwhelming emotion and a sense of responsibility. I knew that as Face of Bulawayo, I would be a role model for many young people, especially those from my city.
“I’m ready to use this platform to make a positive impact — to inspire and empower others to chase their dreams. I’m prepared to take on new challenges, learn, grow and make a difference in my community. I want to shine a light on Bulawayo. I am the Face of Bulawayo 2025, and I’m ready to make my mark,” she said.
Beyond the crown and sash, Mdhluli’s reign will focus on advocacy.
“As Face of Bulawayo, I’m motivated to use this platform for good by continuing my advocacy. I’m grateful for the support I received from my school and family, and I aim to carry forward the Face of Bulawayo campaign — ‘Striding Against Breast Cancer’,” she said.
Her plan is both clear and purposeful. She hopes to collaborate with breast cancer organisations to educate communities about the risks, symptoms and importance of early detection — key themes woven into the fabric of the pageant.
“I’ll work with breast cancer organisations to ensure that everyone in Bulawayo understands how we, as a city, can stand together against breast cancer,” she said.
The event’s significance was underscored by the presence of esteemed guests of honour, including Bulawayo Provincial Medical Director Dr Maphios Siamuchembu, Youth Quota MP for Bulawayo Province Sikhuphukile Dube and Opportunity Moyo from the Women Empowerment Fund. — @MbuleloMpofu
