An 18-year-old man from Gavillian Farm in Norton has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for raping an 11-year-old girl.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the teenager was convicted after sexually assaulting the juvenile in May this year while she was gathering firewood in a nearby bushy area.

The victim was playing with her younger sister before leaving to collect firewood close to their home.

“It is alleged that the offender, who had earlier walked past the children, followed the victim and attacked her from behind,” reads the statement.

The offender allegedly pushed the victim to the ground and raped her.

The minor arrived home in tears, prompting her aunt to ask her what had happened. The child then disclosed the abuse, after which the aunt immediately notified the victim’s mother and the matter was reported to the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

In a statement, the NPA warned that perpetrators of sexual violence will be prosecuted and held accountable.
