THE 14-year-old girl accused of abducting a two-year-old toddler was found in possession of the same clothing she allegedly wore during the commission of the offence, police have confirmed.
The discovery, made during investigations following the dramatic kidnapping incident at Meikles Mall earlier this week, is expected to form part of the prosecution’s evidence as authorities tighten their case against the teenage suspect.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said on February 19 at around 1100 hours Fawcett security technicians who were at Meikles Mall attending to CCTV system received information from the members of the public who had seen the pictures of the kidnapped baby on social media that there was a woman who was seen along Herbert Chitepo Street carrying a baby matching description of the kidnapped baby.
“The technicians quickly alerted detectives who swiftly reacted to the information and found the accused person with the baby already apprehended by members of the public and locked up,” said Insp Msebele.
She said the minor was arrested and taken to the police station, adding that a brown hood jacket inscribed Boston and a pair of brown and black sandals was recovered in a black paper gift bag that the accused was carrying and seized as exhibit.
“The baby was wearing a pink top, blue jean trousers and grey leggings. Her jean trousers was missing,” said Insp Msebele.
Insp Msebele said the baby was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for examination by doctors who concluded that there was nothing wrong with her.
“The accused person’s mother was interviewed and she stated that her daughter left home for an unknown destination about two weeks ago. She further stated that it was not her first time to do so,” said Insp Msebele.
