AVISHI Raina (17) is raising the Zimbabwean flag high at the International Junior and Senior Badminton Open, which got underway in Kampala, Uganda, yesterday.

More than 100 players from South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Zimbabwe and hosts Uganda are taking part in the tournament.

Raina believes she had adequate preparations as she had the privilege of being coached by international coaches for a month ahead of the tournament.

“I think I have had enough preparations for the event and I am very confident that I can fight for a top finish and win some silverware at the competition.

“I have had over a month of training with top coaches in South Africa and I feel that if I’m to properly apply what I was taught, I can win and make my country proud.

“It is my dream and target to win some accolades at an international level so that I can also inspire a lot of people to join the sport.

“We all know that the sport is still growing, but I believe that through success stories, we can attract more players, especially the youths.

“So I will do my best,” she said.
