A Sakubva teenager was sentenced to perform 210 hours of community service last week after being convicted of theft by a Mutare magistrate.
Nyasha Chiwai appeared before Mr Langton Mukwengi.
He pleaded guilty to contravening Section 113 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act.
The court heard that on October 12, Chiwai was in the company of his friends when they approached Manyathi restaurant with the aim of buying food.
The trio allegedly purchased their food and were offered chairs while waiting to be served.
“While waiting for their food to be prepared, the restaurant’s supervisor left behind a wallet with $400. Chiwai took advantage of the absence of the supervisor and stole the money together with the wallet. When he brought the food the supervisor discovered that the money had been stolen leading to Chiwai’s arrest.
“He was searched and found in possession of the money,” said Ms Christine Mwenga.
Chiwai disputed the amount of money which was said to be stolen. He begged for leniency saying what he did was wrong and unacceptable in the society.
“I erred Your Worship; I know it was wrong may you please forgive me. They are also lying that I took $400, I only took $40,” pleaded Chiwai.
