successfully completing an intensive competency evaluation held recently by the International Association of Facilitators in Geneva, Switzerland. He was the only African at the event.
The certification is granted to candidates that would have demonstrated evidence of competency in five core facilitation areas.
These include creating collaborative client relationships, planning appropriate group processes, creating and sustaining a participatory environment and guiding the group to appropriate and useful outcomes.
Other competencies include building and maintaining professional knowledge and modelling a positive professional.
The process takes several months to complete, and is recognised as a serious commitment to the field.
Mr Chiketa is now in a position to facilitate in various facets on behalf of companies and organisations such as strategic planning.
“In terms of strategic planning when a company or organisation engages me as a facilitator, I go in and assist the company personnel to brainstorm on the ideas that they have so that they come up with a plan that addresses their concerns that speaks to the five competencies underpinning facilitation,” he said.
“I am proud to have demonstrated mastery in the field through achievement of this certification. I am joining a small, but growing group of facilitators who have been acknowledged as leaders in their profession.”
He says his immediate plans are for the International Association of Facilitators to set up a regional office in Zimbabwe to enable the certification of more Zimbabwean facilitators.
Mr Chiketa is also a trained interaction leader with the British Council and a Service Quality Institute (US) trained customer service trainer.
He is currently managing the Econet Learning Academy that has the mandate of “Developing Leaders with Global Impact”.
“I love Leadership Development and having stayed at Mandel Training Centre where I ended up as business executive responsible for human capability development.
“Building people potential and competencies runs in my blood whether at work or at home. I believe God has deposited special capacity in us and we need to run with the ball in our areas,” he said.
But is this what he had always envisioned to do?
“When I was young, I wanted to join the army specifically the Air Force of Zimbabwe. I thought it was easy to go up through the ranks. At one point I also wanted to do apprenticeships with the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority or the then Postal and Telecommunications Corporation. It was more to do with the image of these institutions during those times.
“I, however, settled for human resources despite my limited knowledge of what it was about. I was convinced to join the profession by Eric Mahamba Sithole who was head of training with Stanbic Bank.
“I visited him in Harare where I told him of my desire to pursue a career in training. He was the vice president of IPMZ then and I subsequently joined the institute which nurtured me in my profession.”
But how did it all begin?
Mr Chiketa was born in Gokwe on November 8, 1980 as an only child, a factor that had a negative impact on his early childhood.
“Being an only child I was raised in an environment without competition and also without co-operation at peer level. This affected my socialisation process as I did not share the same experiences that my peers had with their siblings,” he said.
He is, however, appreciative of the role his mother played in shaping his destiny.
“My greatest influence during childhood came from my mother who taught me to be resilient and also to be a man of excellence. She taught me to do the best even in the absence of people supervising me.
“I leant a number of chores by virtue of being an only child. I would wash the plates, do the laundry and iron, which had a big influence on my perspective of life. It gave me the right foundation,” he said.
Mr Chiketa did his primary schooling at Gawa Primary School in Gokwe and later transferred to Senga Primary School in Gweru.
He then proceeded to Holy Cross High School in Chirumhanzu for his secondary education. He did his A-Levels at Rio Tinto Zhombe High School. After completing secondary school, he embarked on a Bsc Honours Human Resource Management degree with the Midlands State University.
Mr Chiketa also holds a Diploma in Training Management with Institute of People Management of Zimbabwe (IPMZ), a Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management (IPMZ), an intermediary certificate in Banking with the Institute of Bankers Zimbabwe (IOBZ).
He is currently doing his thesis for a Master of Commerce in Strategic Management and Corporate Governance with Midlands State University.
He holds certificates in Knowledge Management with Stellenbosch Business School (Cape Town), and Expert Negotiation with the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
He has a Master Certificate in ROI from Villanova University and the ROI Institute in the United States of America.
He has received several awards, which include the best manager under the Delta Corporation Management Development Programme 2008.
He was also nominated in the Who is Who of Professionals by the Who is Who Historical Society an organisation based in the US in 2011.
Besides his work, Mr Chiketa also enjoys playing golf and watching soccer, particularly the Zimbabwe national team, the Warriors.
What advice does he have for the young people intending to venture in his line of work?
“I recommend young people to be focused. They should match their areas of strength to what they want to do. I have leant, that when people pursue their areas of interest they generally excel.
“Because I continue to sharpen my skills, this year I was able to raise the Zimbabwean flag in Geneva. I also recommend people to get mentors who can also provide guidance and professional enhancement,” he says.
He is married to Memory Isa and they have two children a boy, Bazelel and a girl, Greatness.
