Introduction of the SHDSL follows launch of the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) last year but the former provides increased bandwidth for both uploads and downloads while the latter provides fast download speeds but slower upload speeds.
Over the years, TelOne was using the analogue telephone system which was not convenient on internet services compared to modern digital technology.
In a statement, TelOne acting managing director Mr Hampton Mhlanga said customers could access the new service without major network rewiring.
He, however, said unlike the ADSL, the SHDSL does not allow calls and use of the internet at the same time.
“Unlike ADSL, SHDSL does not allow users to make calls on the same line connected to the SHDSL modem.
“Customers are encouraged to dedicate one of their telephone lines for this service or apply for a new telephone line from TelOne,” he said.
Mr Mhlanga said the new technology would be supported by already existing copper infrastructure.
TelOne has an installed landline capacity of 401 500 lines but currently only 350 000 lines are working.
The company has failed to connect more people to its landline network due to financial and infrastructure limitations and stiff competition from mobile phone companies. — New Ziana.
