adminIn his keynote address at the two- day re-launch gala held at Chaplin High School at the weekend, managing director Hampton Mhlanga said such social platforms helped on team building and fostering skills sharing outside formal environment.
“We felt it would be a noble idea to revive the sporting festival which provides a platform for staff to interact on a social level and share our common goal of being the hub of excellence. On the international scene we are also exploring ways to return to the regional games which are ideal in sharing telecommunication skills outside a formal environment,” said Mhlanga.
He said the games also created a culture of unity and wellness through sport. “We are re-launching the gala as a response to the needs of modern corporate culture in which healthy living is not an option but a necessity.
“This gala is purely about celebrating wellness with an active body, mind and a healthy smile and offer an opportunity to refresh and reduce stress,” said Mhlanga.
The two-day gala saw provincial teams competing in four sporting disciplines namely soccer, netball, darts and pool and plans are afoot to include more disciplines in the future editions. The host province Midlands dominated the games, winning the soccer and pool gold medals.
In soccer, a Trynos Matanda 82nd minute goal was enough to hand the Madhara Mufaro-coached Midlands a 1-0 win over Mashonaland.
This was Matanda’s third goal of the tournament earning him the tournament’s golden boot award while earning his team a floating trophy and a $500 winning purse.
Mashonaland went home $300 richer. The Midlands pool team pocketed $200 for finishing top.
In netball, the Hilda Chigwere- inspired Mashonaland beat Masvingo 22-11 to scoop gold and walk home with a floating trophy and $400 relegating Masvingo to a purse of $250. There was darts joy for
Matabeleland earning them a floating trophy, $200, five T-shirts and five caps.
Meanwhile, TelOne has donated part of the sporting equipment used during the tournament to Chaplin High School as part of giving back to the school for availing its facilities .
The school’s deputy head Adamson Banda received soccer balls and netballs used for the tournament and which also saw the two additional goalposts erected being donated.
