The duo’s performance kept Zimbabwe relevant in world golf. McDonald was ecstatic that Zimbabwe finished in a respectable position.
“We managed to keep Zimbabwe on the radar” he said.
The de Jonge and McDonald duo could have improved on their overall position had they not dropped two shots in the back nine on the 13th and 16th holes.
The two golfers also finished higher than neighbours South Africa represented at the tournament by Charl Schwartzel and Louise Oosthuizen.
Both major winners came in 12th after carding a 17-under score of 271.
Team Zimbabwe sneaked into 11th place after the South African duo tainted their score card by their two-over par 74 in the final round.
Yesteryear golfers such as Hall of Famer Nick Price, Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone have in the past been outstanding for Zimbabwe, winning major tournaments. At one time Price was the top seed at the PGA tour world rankings.
McDonald believes that Zimbabwe can improve if it gives support to upcoming golfers. “It was a great experience in the World Cup and we are proud we could follow in the footsteps of Nick, Tony and McNulty” he said.
“The exciting crop of young up-and-coming golfers coming through such as Gary Croker’s son, Sean, should now aim even higher. We hope we got Zimbabwe back to its rightful place at the top of world golf”
